Uniform, Dress Code & Equipment
All three 11 - 16 schools in the Secondary School Partnership have adopted a shared dress code for all students, which has a common set of uniform standards.
High standards of dress and personal appearance for all students are an important part of Les Varendes High School. We expect students to take pride in their appearance and in being a member of the school community.
The adoption of a school uniform plays a valuable role in contributing to the ethos of our schools by instilling pride, promoting a sense of community and belonging, and helping to protect pupils from peer group pressure.
It is strongly recommended that all items, unless indicated, are purchased from local uniform retailers as this will help to ensure that the dress code requirements are met.
Uniform Allowance – The States of Guernsey operates a means-tested grant scheme to help parents with the cost of buying school uniforms. Grants are awarded on a sliding scale dependent on the parents’ residual income once certain allowances have been made. This scheme is administered by Social Security, and proof of income and rent/mortgage is required. All items of clothing should be clearly marked with the student’s name.

Blazer |
Black embroidered blazer with logo on the left chest pocket. Blazer to be worn at all times. |
|
Jumper |
Years 7 - 10: V-neck grey pullover with LVHS school logo. Year 11: Plain V-neck black pullover with no logos. Only to be worn under a school blazer. |

Tie |
Years 7 - 10: Navy with a thin white stripe and house colour stripe. Year 11: Black and white striped, provided by school. Ties to be worn at all times. |

Skirts, Trousers, Shorts and Belts |
Trousers: Standard black full-length trousers that sit no more than just above (or on) shoes. Skirt: Black box pleat tailored skirt of appropriate length and strictly no more than two inches above or below the knee. (Leggings, jeggings, jeans or similar items are not acceptable; or Tailored school shorts. These must be suitable school wear only and are available only from uniform retailers. If a belt is required then it must be plain black. |

Shirts |
A white long sleeved or short sleeved shirt tucked in. No polo shirts. |

Shoes |
Shoes should be sensible smart black polishable shoes. (This does not include black trainers, boots, backless, stiletto, canvas, ballet pumps, sling-back or toeless shoes). |

Socks and Tights |
Either socks or tights may be worn but not both together. Socks must be plain white (no sports logos) with a skirt or plain black with shorts or trousers. Trainer socks are not permitted. Tights must be black. |

Coats |
A sensible school coat which can be worn over the school blazer to and from school and outside during lunchtime. These should not be worn during lessons, between lessons or during morning break. Hoodies and jumpers are not to be worn within the building. |

Jewellery |
Students may wear one pair of plain stud earrings and a wristwatch. No other jewellery may be worn (including rings, bracelets, facial piercings, bars or belly button piercings). No clear studs or retainers are permitted. All facial piercings must be removed before school. |

Make-Up, Nails and Hair |
Discreet makeup may be worn. Nail varnish/nail extensions/Gels should not be worn. False eyelashes or coloured (cosmetic) contact lenses are not permitted. Hair must be of a natural colour and styled in a smart, sensible manner off the face. Long hair must be tied back for practical lessons. Extreme styles, including tramlines and other razored patterns, are not allowed (Grade 2 minimum). |

Misc. |
An apron for Food Technology is available from the school (students will be advised when this is required). |

If the above dress code is not followed then the student will be asked to remove the relevant item and it may be confiscated until the end of the school day. If a student is missing an item then a replacement will be lent to them. |

Physical Education Items |

Shorts, Skorts, Tracksuit Bottoms and Leggings |
Students must wear one of the following; School black and blue PE shorts, school black and blue PE Skort, Black leggings or black tracksuit/jogging bottoms. No gym, Nike Pro Shorts or any items with motifs/ writing are to be worn. |

Socks |
Plain white/black sports socks to be worn for indoor activities. Light blue football socks required for Football, Rugby, Hockey and other field activities. These socks must be different to those being worn in the normal school day by students to promote clean foot hygiene. |

Shoes |
Sports trainers/football or hockey boots(suitable for astro turf/field) | ||||
|
Swimming |
Swim shorts, trunks or one piece swimming costume (any colour) along with a towel. Goggles and swim caps are optional. |

Football, Rugby and Hockey equipment. |
Students should have suitable footwear for the activity (trainers for AstroTurf and football boots for the field). Shin pads, gum shield (highly recommended). Football socks should be knee length (to cover shin pads). Hockey sticks will be provided to students. |

Sports Jumper |
Black and blue ¼ zip Fleece top with school logo. No other hoodie/jumper is to be substituted. |

Expectations on PE kit being worn when injured/ill or forgotten. |
Students are expected to wear their full PE kit and still attend their PE lesson and assist the teacher/their peers even if injured/ill. Students must have a note of explanation from home prior to the lesson if, for any reason, they are not able to participate practically. A spare kit will be made available for all students if they forget their PE kit. This is cleaned/washed, dried and ready for students after use. |

Monitoring and Compliance |

Parents/carers are expected to support the dress code, ensuring their child comes to school correctly dressed, clean, in good repair, and ready for the day. Should there be any reason why a student is unable to follow the Dress Code, parent/carers must inform the school in writing. Each school’s Behaviour Policy outlines the measures that may be taken when students do not meet the expectations set out in the Dress Code. |

Years 7 to 11 - Equipment |
|

In order for students to maximise their learning, it is crucial that they have the correct equipment with them. We expect all students to bring the following to school each day. |

|
Chromebook |
Students must bring their Chromebook (fully charged) to school everyday. |
|
Stationery |
Students will be issued with a power pack (pencil case) at the start of the academic year. Each pack will contain two pens, two pencils, a ruler and a rubber, a whiteboard and a whiteboard marker. Students are responsible for looking after their equipment. |

School Bag |
Books and equipment should be carried in a substantial, waterproof bag. Handbags and clutch bags are not acceptable. |

Timetable |
A paper timetable will be issued to each student at the start of term. |
|
Scientific Calculator |
For both Maths and Science, students will be required to use a scientific calculator. The following model is highly recommended: Casio FX-85GTPLUS Scientific Calculator. Calculators can be purchased from our Maths department. |
